Tony is the Founder & Director of Booktopia, which employs 300 people and sells one item every 3.8 seconds. They ship more books to Australians than any other Australian business. In Christmas 2021 they were shipping 45,000 individual items per day and their revenue for FY2022 was $240 million. In August 2015 they bought Angus & Robertson, a 133-year-old Australian book retailing brand and operated that as a separate website.
They were voted Australian Book Retailer of the Year 3 times. Booktopia has been a finalist seven times from 2011 to 2018 Telstra Business Awards for the Medium Sized Business Category. In 2014 and 2018 they won the award. Plus they won NSW Business of the Year and Australian People’s Choice in 2018. They are the only company to make the AFR/BRW Fast 100 for 8 years from 2009 to 2017. They are ranked in the Power Retail Top 100 Websites. From 2013 to 2022. Booktopia has won multiple categories in the Online Retailer Industry Awards over many years.
They are proudly 100% Australian-owned and love what they are achieving with their team. They listed on the ASX in 2020. Tony started Booktopia in February 2004 on a budget of $10/day as a side project. All of this was accomplished with no external investment until 2020 when the revenue hit $150m. They simply sold more books and reinvested the proceeds. Tony has been in business with his brother, sister, and brother-in-law for the past 22 years.
Booktopia has 35,000 sqm of office and warehouse and it is their stock holding of 150,000 titles and ability to ship books immediately that is proving to separate them from any local competitors. They also have a flat fee of $7.95 per order for as many books as you want.
Their philanthropic program has donated $3 million of books & cash to literacy-based projects, writers’ festivals & readers’ conferences including indigenous literacy programs.
It’s a David and Goliath story. Australia is the only country in the English speaking world that has an online book retailer that has taken on Amazon and won in their domestic market.
